He then enrolled into the first class at Georgia State University Law School in 1982 where he was the first student called on in the history of the law school. He eventually became an editor of the law review, an officer of Phi Alpha Delta, and graduated near the top of his class. He worked for the next 11 years as an associate and then a partner of Gray, Gilliland, and Gold, P.C., where his practice concentrated in all areas of insurance defense litigation at both the trial court and appellate court levels. John started his own firm, Austin & Sparks, P.C., on March 1, 1996, where he still handles a large volume of traumatic injury and wrongful death cases but also has expanded his practice to also handle plaintiff’s personal injury cases in addition to the defense cases.

John is an AV® preeminent rated attorney by Martindale Hubble and has conducted over 75 jury trials in both state and federal courts, has presented oral arguments in hundreds of cases at the trial court level, and has presented oral arguments before the Georgia Supreme Court, the Georgia Court of Appeals, and the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. He is also a registered civil mediator with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution.

His youngest son is a senior at the University of Georgia. John enjoys various athletics including jogging, golf, and tennis, and continues to be the public address announcer for the varsity baseball team at his sons’ former high school.
