Elite ADR Firms to Present 3-Part CLE Series on Mediation & Arbitration

Dispute resolution professionals from Georgia-based Miles Mediation & Arbitration and Upchurch Watson White & Max, based in Florida and Alabama, will team up for three webinars this year, accredited by bar associations for CLE in all three states. 

 

ATLANTA, GA., May 14, 2019 — A dozen legal educators– mediators and arbitrators recognized nationwide for their experience in facilitating lawsuit settlements — have been selected from the distinguished panels of the Southeast’s leading dispute resolution firms to present three 75-minute webinars before the end of the year.  

 

Lawyers in at least three states, Alabama, Florida and Georgia, will be able to collect continuing legal education (CLE) credits in ethics and professionalism for attending the distance-education programs scheduled for June 14, Sept.18 and Dec.11. Miles Mediation & Arbitration and Upchurch Watson White & Max Mediation Group,  collectively featuring more than 60 seasoned civil trial mediators and arbitrators with thousands of settlements in their careers, recently agreed to this educational partnership.

CLE programs include:
  • Noon, Friday, June 14 —Organizing and Structuring Multi-Party Complex Issue Mediationswith John Miles and Joseph Murphey of Miles Mediation & Arbitration and Lawrence “Larry” M. Watson Jr. and Brenda J. Newman of UWWM. These neutrals are especially suited to delivering the program. John Miles, the founder and CEO of Miles has mediated thousands of cases throughout his prominent career. Joseph Murphey, widely regarded as one of the most effective neutrals in the country, was recognized as an ADR Trailblazer by the National Law Journal. Watson, a founding principal of his firm, is known for his leadership in this practice area and is past chair of the American Bar Association Section of Litigation’s construction litigation committee. Ms. Newman is accustomed to dealing with construction and other complex disputes as a litigator and a neutral. She is the current co-chair of the Orange County Bar Association’s construction committee.

  • Noon Wednesday, Sept. 18 – “Elegant Arbitration – Designing Cost Effective and Timely Arbitration Proceedings” with Miles neutrals Jennifer Grippa and Matthew Thiry, and UWWM shareholders Jeffrey M. Fleming and  Michelle Jernigan. Ms. Grippa is on the Board of Directors for the Atlanta Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section, and she regularly speaks on business and construction litigation, and arbitration best practices. Mr. Thiry, a mediator, arbitrator, and special master, regularly speaks and writes on complex arbitration.  Mr. Fleming has served as an Orange County and Ninth Circuit (Fla.) Judge and now serves as an arbitrator and has been appointed as a Special Magistrate in multiple jurisdictions. Ms. Jernigan has experience as a FINRA arbitrator, serving as sole arbiter and as chair on three-member panels, and she has arbitrated consumer and commercial disputes.
     
  • Noon Wednesday, Dec. 11 – “Mediated Negotiations – Tips, Techniques and the Language of Professionalism” with Miles neutrals Bianca Motley Broom and Judge Jason Harper, and UWWM’s Kimberly Sands and Howard R. Marsee. Ms. Motley Broom speaks regularly on ADR best practices and implicit bias. Hon. Jason Harper, a mediator, arbitrator, and senior judge, currently serves as an adjunct professor for Mercer University teaching Workplace Law.  Ms. Sands, a firm UWWM firm principal, is a frequent lecturer and consultant on alternative dispute resolution, mediation, arbitration, civil litigation, and effective negotiation. Mr. Marsee is a member of The Florida Bar Standing Committee on Professionalism and has spoken on this topic for the Florida Dispute Resolution Center.
