Spotlight: Louis Selig

By Kelly K. James
Back in the Dark Ages (i.e., the 1980s), mediator Louis Selig was among the very first to introduce the process and mediate cases in Louisiana. He subsequently moved to Texas, first in San Antonio where he became active there; then to El Paso; and then to Houston where he remains active.
Louis continues to mediate cases in Louisiana as well as Missouri and other states. He has also served on national mediator panels for John Deere and Laidlaw International, Inc, mediating cases throughout the U.S. for both companies. In addition, he has mediated maritime cases in Greece, Scotland, Panama and Peru.
Louis enjoys mediating complex matters, multi-party cases, and those of significant value, although he concedes that smaller ones can be harder to close. His toughest case to date was a three-week mediation that included 22 parties and involved competing claims of wrongful deaths, personal injuries, property losses, and environmental violations. But it was resolved under confidential terms known only to Louis, the judge, and the attorney hired to coordinate checks and documents — in fact, none of the parties knew anything other than what their respective clients received or paid.
Candidly, Louis isn’t much for marketing himself. He believes that a mediator’s performance inside the conference room speaks for itself and insists that “he is only as good as his last case!”
Louis feels blessed to have this career and has no plans to climb down from the saddle anytime soon. He is pleased to have joined Miles and hopes to have a pivotal role in the company’s expansion into Texas, especially San Antonio and Austin.
